Cleaning guidelines – COVID-19 deep clean

Any COVID-19 deep clean must follow the below cleaning guidance to help prevent the transmission of COVID-19 through the cleaning activities.

Training:

Ensure all cleaning staff have been trained to safely use the cleaning and disinfecting products, equipment, personal protect equipment that will be used.

Cleaning products:

Clean surfaces with a detergent before using a disinfectant. Use a household or commercial grade disinfectant that states on the label it is viricidal or a listed TGA product with specific COVID-19 claims. Fogging should not be used for COVID-19 deep cleans.

Please make sure to regularly change your face masks based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. When available, always choose a mask with a proper protection rating as well as approvals from relevant authorities.

Workplace risk assessment:

Identify all of the areas in the workplace that the suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case has been during their infectious period. Close off the work area in part Training or fully as required.

Monitoring:

Perform completion checks to ensure the deep clean has occurred to the expected standard.

Remove Clutter:

Designated personnel safely remove all clutter from surfaces to enable effective cleaning to occur. Waste disposal to occur via clinical waste stream.

PPE:

Put on and take off PPE safely.

Cleaning Schedule:

Identify all high and minimally touched surfaces that will need to be cleaned. Minimally touched surfaces such as floors may only need to be cleaned if not included in daily routine cleaning schedules. Other surfaces such as walls, curtains and windows may only need to be cleaned when the confirmed case may have had prolonged exposure i.e. hotel room. Mark all surfaces that will need to be cleaned onto a COVID-19 deep cleaning schedule. This can be used to define the scope of contract cleaners work. 

Hygiene Tips for Workers:

❑ Stay home if you are sick and get tested for COVID-19..
❑ Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
❑ Take care when removing gloves. Ensure you wash your hands after removing them.
❑ Maintain physical distancing when travelling to and at work.
❑ Wear masks and change after 4 hours of continuous use, when moist and/or visibly soiled and after performing a COVID-19 deep clean.
